From a small seed planted by one man in 2010, Petstra Gardens has flourished and grown into a team of dedicated professionals who specialise in complete garden transformations.
Our experience and skills cover all facets of landscape design, construction and horticulture, yet we are also happy to work with any landscape architects, designers, or builders you engage, to ensure the best results for you and your garden.
Unless specialists or licensed trades such as builders, electricians and plumbers are required for your project, the work is all done by us.
We run a tight ship, both on site and at our desk
Our team is our greatest asset, so we provide all our staff with a safe work environment by continually investing in tools and equipment and, of course, by paying their wages and dues on time, every time.
With an emphasis on efficiency without compromising quality, we take responsibility for the quality of our workmanship and carefully select the best materials for the job.
Our reputation is paramount. We value good relationships with both our clients and our suppliers, so all our dues get paid on time, all insurances are kept current and our cashflow is managed to ensure your investment pays off.
We respect you and your property, so at the end of each day we leave the worksite tidy and safe.
Petstra Gardens is a member of the Master Builders Association of Victoria, the MBAV, which ensures we keep up to date on all matters concerning our industry.
Because above all, when you are investing in your home and property, choosing the right partner will reward you for many years to come.
Jan Meinsma arrived in Melbourne from the Netherlands in 1999, pursuing a career in media and publishing. He moved into marketing and project management roles, but decided to follow his passion and go back to school to learn about gardens, landscapes and nature.
After qualifying in Horticulture & Landscape at Holmesglen (where he was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Student Award), Jan backed up his garden and plant knowledge with studies in Small Business Management at RMIT.
What’s in a name?
Petstra was the surname of Jan’s maternal grandfather, Jan Petstra, and is a unique name belonging to only one family worldwide.
Originating in the northern part of the Netherlands, The Petstras are a family of entrepreneurs, owning businesses ranging from camping and sports stores to pharmacies and shoe repair outlets.
Opa Jan was the local greengrocer in the village of Hollandscheveld in the Netherlands, with a retail shop and a delivery service, as seen in this picture. He was also an avid gardener, with a market garden and greenhouses, and was an important teacher and influence on Jan Meinsma when he was a boy.
Jan says naming his business after his grandfather pays homage to his heritage and reflects his family’s values of integrity, fairness and honesty.
